The Danish Windmill is a museum for all people interested in Denmark, Danish customs, Scandinavian traditions, and of course, Windmills. Elk Horn’s Danish Windmill is America’s only authentic working Danish Windmill. The Mill, originally built in Nørre Snede, Denmark in 1848 was brought to the United States November, l975 and rebuilt in Elk Horn, Iowa by community volunteers in l976, our Bicentennial year. The Danish Windmill finished restoration work. The Mill was restored to working condition and serves as a historical and educational museum.

  • The Danish community is located six miles north of Interstate 80 (exit 54). The community with its rich rural ties is proud of its distinction of being the largest Danish settlement in the United States.
  • In addition to the Windmill, you’ll want to visit other cultural heritage sites in the area such as the Museum of Danish America which will allow you to trace the steps of Danish Immigrants and their settlement in the United States and Bedstemor’s House, a restored turn-of-the-century home. Stepping through its door will take you back to your grandmother’s time.
  • Visit quaint shops and stores with unique and lovely gift items. You’ll also enjoy the authentic tastes of Danish foods and baked goods.
  • Make Elk Horn a stop on your next vacation or a day trip and enjoy the charm, hospitality, and heritage of this Danish village.
